Breast MRI invaluable tool for breast cancer screening, treatment planning

Properly diagnosing and treating breast cancer can be a complex process, and patients need the right access to technology and answers. The Breast Center at Wellness Lubbock serves patients across the region by providing comprehensive medical care to identify and treat all forms of breast cancer. The goal: to provide the gentlest and most effective care possible with the best outcome for patients.Last year, The Breast Center added the Aurora® Dedicated Breast MRI System to their facility, the first dedicated breast MRI in Lubbock County designed to provide the highest quality images of breast anatomy to diagnose and assist in treatment planning for breast cancer.“The Breast Center is on the forefront of imaging technology – that’s a real benefit for patients,” says Jui-Lien “Lillian” Chou, M.D., founder of Wellness Lubbock. “If a patient has a concern about the possibility of cancer, or has been diagnosed with breast cancer, she needs an MRI.”Katherine Hall, M.D., D.A.B.R., Medical Director at Wellness Lubbock, explains that breast MRI plays an essential role in three key areas of cancer diagnosis and treatment, including breast conservation:Screening – The superior image quality and precision of breast MRI makes it uniquely suited as a diagnostic resource. In addition to regular mammograms, many women can benefit from added screening using breast MRI, including those with newly diagnosed breast cancer, a personal history of breast cancer, a strong family history of breast cancer, BRCA mutation, previous biopsy revealing atypical ductal hyperplasia, dense breast tissue, or other indicators as identified by a physician. The goal is to detect cancer as early as possible for a better treatment outcome.Characterization – Breast MRI, which has more than a 90 percent sensitivity for breast cancer, can provide answers for patients who receive inconclusive findings or conflicting clinical findings for the presence of breast cancer using other imaging methods. If traditional breast imaging reveals something suspicious, Dr. Chou encourages patients to request an MRI prior to a biopsy.“I personally advise an MRI before the biopsy to provide a thorough investigation using the highest possible imaging prior to any invasive procedure,” she says. In some cases, the MRI may rule out the need for the biopsy, while for other patients, the MRI will provide a very clear image for specialists to work from before trauma is caused to the tissue as a result of the biopsy procedure.“
