Aurora Dedicated Breast MRI key to early diagnosis, proper treatment of breast cancer
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women in the United States, and except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among American women. Nearly 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in 2010.There is no effective prevention for breast cancer, so breast screening and early detection are key to improving survival. In 2008, Wellness Lubbock, a facility dedicated to women’s imaging, announced the addition of the Aurora® 1.5Tesla Dedicated Breast MRI System to their facility. The Aurora® 1.5Tesla Dedicated Breast MRI System is the only FDA-cleared dedicated breast MRI system specifically designed for the detection, diagnosis and management of breast disease. The Aurora Dedicated Breast MRI is designed specifically for breast anatomy; every functional component of the system is created solely for breast MRI.Unlike either traditional or even digital mammography, dedicated breast MRI provides diagnostic images which catch 95 percent of breast cancers, including lesions as small as 1 millimeter in size, 1/10th the size of those detectable by mammography alone. In addition, breast MRI can detect tumors which are located close to the chest wall, as well as pinpoint multiple tumors.“The sensitivity of breast MRI, particularly its superior image quality and precision, makes it uniquely suited as a diagnostic resource,” says Dr. Jui-Lien “Lillian” Chou, founder of The Breast Center at Wellness Lubbock. “The goal is to detect cancer as early as possible for a better treatment outcome. There are several ways to identify people who are at risk, but breast MRI can conclusively answer a patient’s concern about having cancer or not.”Steven E. Harms, M.D., FACR, recognized nationally in the area of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), also stresses the importance of breast MRI.“The Breast Center at Wellness Lubbock is on the forefront of imaging technology – a real benefit for patients,” says Dr. Harms. “If a patient has a concern about the possibility of cancer, for example a strong family history, she needs an MRI.”Dr. Harms explains that breast MRI plays an essential role in three key areas:Screening – Many wome
